Animal Care – 10 week courses
Group lessons (online via Zoom) for students wishing to expand their love and knowledge of everything ‘animal’. This course is ideal for students who are home educated or out of school for prolonged periods of time. Units include: Animal Health and Welfare, Animal Behaviour and Handling and Animal Husbandry. Each unit comprises of ten 1 hour lessons. Students will study mammals, birds and reptiles using a variety of resources to ensure students gain practical skills as well as increased knowledge and understanding. The units will help students to stay safer around animals and prepare them for further study or work in the animal care industry when they are older. Each unit runs once per term. You can choose to enrol on any number of units. Students who enrol in units for this course will also enhance their broader skills in literacy, numeracy and particularly science (biology) which will be invaluable in supporting their wider educational progression.

Unit details:
Animal Health and Welfare
You will learn about:
- How to monitor and maintain the health and wellbeing of animals – for example the signs of normal and abnormal health in animals and routine animal health checks and wellbeing strategies for a range of animals including a mammal, bird and reptile.
- How to Groom animals and use preventative medications – for example worming, requirements for grooming and practical grooming for a range of animals including a mammal, bird and reptile.
- Basic animal first-aid principles and practices – Common animal emergencies and their responses, the main principles of animal first aid and first-aid procedures for common animal injuries and ailments.
- Feeding including digestion and nutrition – For example to understand the relationships between digestive biology of animals, provision of suitable diets and the effects of them on health.
- The Animal welfare Act 2018 and the 5 needs of animals – the animal’s need for a suitable environment, the animal’s need for a suitable diet, the animal’s need to be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns, the need the animal has to be housed with, or apart from, other animals and the animal’s need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
Animal Behaviour and Handling
You will learn about:
- What are normal and abnormal behaviours in specified mammals, birds and reptiles?
- Explore and observe animals’ behaviour to determine their mood, health and wellbeing including signs of stress, risk assessment and practical observation of a specified mammal, bird and reptile.
- How to handle and restrain animals safely – using restraining equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE). How to reduce stress and correct handling and restraint techniques (including approaching animals safely).
Animal Husbandry
You will learn about:
- How to plan and provide food and water for animals, including monitoring of food and water intake, for a range of animals including a mammal, bird and reptile.
- Providing suitable accommodation and how to maintain an animals’ accommodation, for a range of animals including a mammal, bird and reptile..
- Moving and transporting animals safely: to include a specified mammal, bird and reptile.
What will I need?
- You will need access to a device with internet access and zoom software downloaded.
- Headphones.
- You don’t need access to animals for this course but if you do have pets it may enhance your enjoyment and application of the course.
